About Us

This website provides a virtual information point about Rubh' an Dùnain, the ancestral homeland of the MacAskills on the Isle of Skye in the Western Isles of Scotland.

It was created by the MacAskills of Rubh' an Dùnain Society, a small not-for-profit organisation constituted in May 2006 by descendants of Iain 'Dubh' MacAskill, tacksman at Rubh' an Dùnain in 1683. Family relatives later went on to found the Talisker Distillery on Skye.

Our objective was, and remains, to maintain a sense of identity and kinship and to foster awareness, understanding and on-going research into Rubh' an Dùnain itself.

READ HERE about our vision for the repopulation of the landscape through a dynamic new online community – Friends of Rubh' an Dùnain and give us YOUR COMMENTS.

Better still, why not JOIN US and help deliver this vision.

Today the Society is playing a facilitating role in the move to create the Rubh' an Dùnain of the future. It is entirely self-supporting and receives no grants or external financial assistance. It levies no membership charge. Support of any kind is always welcome. Our office bearers are:

Secretary
It is with great sadness that we record the death of our long-standing secretary, Tom Steele, after an illness, fought with immense bravery. Tom was a man of passions – for his work as a pioneering radio journalist and presenter; for travel, particularly to the north-west highlands of Scotland to which he was wedded; and especially for his wife, Fiona, children and grand-children.
A larger-than-life personality, Tom will be greatly missed by all who knew him – and unquestionably by all members and friends of this Society whose creation and development were, to a great extent, the result of his foresight and consistent dedication.
